Q: How do
I make an event?
A: There are
two ways to create a new event:
1: Double
click on the word "Event" in the Event List window. (This is
the recommended method.) Fill in the
necessary information and click on "Save". The event pop up
in the Event list Window.
2. The
second way to make an event (and the slowest way) is to use
the event wizard. Click on "Help" on the
menu bar and select "Event Wizard".
Q: How do
I change the name of an event?
A: Display
the Properties form for the Event and change the name. Click
Save and Close to record your changes.
Q: Why
does the program refuse to post my event?
A: Posting an
Event to a TimeLine does not automatically adjust the viewing
time to the posted Event. To quickly focus on an Event, select
the "Go To" option from the right-mouse popup menu (while
pointing to the Event name in the Event List). This will
readjust the time view to include the selected Event. If this
does not work, look at the start date you input.
If you put in year "200" instead on the year "2000" then
that is where it is posted. Make sure you
have a proper date and time (if applicable).
It is possible to make an event with no date.
It will appear on your Event List but obviously will not
post due to the lack of a start date. The
final suggestion is to make sure you are posting events to the
timeline properly. All you need to do is to
left click on the event name (in the Event List) drag it over
the Name of the TimeLine and let go of the mouse button.
You should see the little icon of the hand holding a
document change to a hand dropping a document.
Q: I got
an error message that I need DCOM95. What in
the world does this mean and where do I find it?
A: This is
caused by the lack of a file sometimes needed by older Windows
operating systems. You need to install an
application called dcom95.exe which is included on the install
CD-ROM. See your Computer Specialist for assistance.
Q: What is
an attachment? Why would anyone want to
attach it to an event?
A: An
attachment really means that a digital file (WordPerfect
document, spreadsheet, database, photo, etc.) is linked to a
specific event. You can access the linked
attachment by right clicking on the event name on your timeline
and clicking on "View Source". One advantage
of linking documents to events is that you can always bring up
the source document that pertains to that particular event.
It also is a nice way to organize a case presentation if
you include digital photos, phone records or scanned copies of
evidence.
Q: Can I
link more than one file to an event?
A: Yes. You
can link as many multi-media files to an event as you would
like.
Q: I want
to rename the title of my timeline. Can this
be done without creating a new file?
A: Yes.
Right-mouse click on the TimeLine title and select the
Properties option. Modify the TimeLine name and click Save to
record your changes.
Q: What
are those random numbers in parentheses beside some of my
events? How can I get rid of them?
A: Those
seemingly random numbers are the program's method of handling
duplicate event names.
Q: Can I
transfer my files to another computer?
A: Yes.
You need to export the file which is located under the
File Menu. If you export the file it will
also export all linked files with it. Be
sure you have enough room on your storage media if you have a
lot of documents linked.
Q: I see
that you can link to web sites. Are the
pages copied to my hard drive so I can export them?
A: No, web
sites are the only attachments that are not copied to the hard
drive, thus they are not exportable. What is
copied is a simple link to the web site. Of
course, you could independently download the site and store it
on your hard drive.
Q: Can
more than one person input/access a timeline at the same time?
A: If you are
on a shared drive then you are not limited as to the number of
people able to access the file. Only one
person will be able to alter the file at a time.
See your Computer Specialist if you have a need to share
files.
Q: Can I
put a picture of my TimeLine into a Word document?
A: If you
click the copy button on the toolbar, an exact copy of your
TimeLine will be placed on your computer's clipboard.
You can open any application and click on "Paste" to
insert a graphic of your TimeLine.
Q: My
TimeLine is too small when I printed it out.
What happened?
A: You need
to maximize your TimeLine window to a full page and then print.
This will print your timeline as a full size graphic.
