As a company dedicated to applying advanced technology and new
methods to problems, we have a vigorous internal research and
development focus. Under the umbrella of the Advanced Systems
Groups labs, our team works on novel applications of technology to
address key customer objectives. This page highlights some of
those efforts.

Open Source Intelligence

During the Sentinel
TMS development process, we have built an extensive database
of entities and relationships pertaining to the Al Qaeda
terrorist network. This database has been used as a test-bed
for Sentinel TMS in order to tune our algorithms and build
new visualization models. TrackingTheThreat is the
open-source version of that database, made public to aid in
the general research of terrorist networks, and to solicit
feedback from individuals or organizations interested in the
field of threat network analysis and visualization.

Web-Based Network Visualization
|
Sentinel TMS offers
advanced and powerful visualizations as a rich-client
application. What happens when you need to move interactive
visualizations to the web? We have been working on a
scaled-down web-friendly version of network graph navigation
developed in the Flash environment. Flash's ubiquity on the
web, combined with its programming capabilities, offers an
intriguing platform for web visualizations.

Large Scale Email Analysis
|
With the burgeoning
reliance on email as a primary communications medium, the
amount of information in email stores is increasing
exponentially. What kind of information can you extract from
email communities through automated analysis? We have been
working on applying graph theory and Social Network Analysis
to this problem. By building graphs based on the To: and From:
addresses, we can build the basic constructs of an
organization. Further refinements such as using the Cc: data to
expand communities, and Bcc: to identify trust networks allow
us to expand and refine the model around any community or
organization that communicates via email.
